Maternal and newborn deaths are a major public health problem in Kenya. In 2020, the maternal mortality ratio was 530 deaths per 100,000 live births. This is much higher than the global average of 223 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. Given the current annual births, this means that there are nearly 5000 women and girls dying annually due to pregnancy and childbirth complications. The ratio of babies who die in the first month of life (neonatal deaths) is also higher than the global average. Kakamega county is the fourth most populous county in Kenya, with the largest rural population. Unfortunately, maternal and child mortality rates in Kakamega is unacceptably high, ranking fifth highest of fifteen counties in Kenya.
HPIC will be working with The Anglican Development Services ADS, our local partner in 2024 to impact this community by:
Improving quality of the maternal, newborn and children’s health services
Strengthening community outreach activities for advancing the maternal, newborn and children’s health outcomes.
Provide need-based trainings for Community Health Volunteers, Community Health Extension Workers, Nurses and midwives.
Facilitate household visits for healthcare outreach, education, and awareness.
Renewing hope for the future and give women and children in this community a chance to live their best life!
